40 Years of Lessons: What I’d Tell My Younger Self (And What I’m Doing Now)
Welcome to the club! If you’ve hit your 40s, you’ve likely realized that your skin has started "talking back." It’s the decade where our past choices—the sun-drenched holidays without SPF, the late nights, and the stress—start to show up uninvited on our faces.
I’m passionate about plant-based ingredients, but I’m also a firm believer in transparency. If I could go back in time, my skincare routine would have looked a lot different. Here is the honest truth about aging, damage control, and why your lifestyle matters more than any jar of cream.
The Retrospective: If I Knew Then What I Know Now
If I could sit down with my 20-year-old self, I wouldn’t just talk about moisturiser. I’d talk about consistency. I’d tell her that skin is an organ that remembers everything. I’d advocate for more sleep, more shade, and a lot less worry.
Today, my routine is focused on damage control. It’s not about "fixing" the past, but about supporting my skin’s health right now. My non-negotiables are:
Mineral Sunscreen Daily: No matter the weather. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are my best friends for blocking UV rays that degrade collagen.
Collagen & Vitamin C: I take a daily supplement. Vitamin C is the essential "key" that helps your body actually process and use collagen effectively.
Red Light Therapy: A game-changer for reducing inflammation and boosting cellular repair.
Hydration & Nutrition: You truly are what you eat. Vibrant skin starts with a high-water-content diet and plenty of healthy fats.
The Truth About Skincare Science
As the founder of a skincare brand, I love natural ingredients. I’m an advocate for plant-based power, but I’m not a "purist" who hates everything else. I actually love trying other brands!
However, what I do begrudge is the marketing machine that tricks people into spending a fortune on "miracle" creams. To understand why some claims are misleading, we have to look at the science:
The Reality Check: Most topical skincare can only affect the epidermis (the surface layer). True aging—the loss of volume, deep wrinkles, and sagging—happens in the dermis (the deeper layer) and the underlying fat and muscle.
No cream can "lift" a face like a surgical procedure or replace lost bone density. Skincare is excellent for improving texture, tone, and surface hydration, but it cannot rewrite your genetics or biology.
Why Plant-Based?
The reason I make plant-based skincare for Mollie & Me is to provide the skin with biocompatible nutrients. Plants are packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals on the surface, preventing further environmental damage. While my products will help your skin look its most radiant and feel its smoothest, the real heavy lifting comes from your life choices. Your Guide to Ageing Gracefully (On Your Own Terms)
How do we slow down the clock and feel good in the skin we’re in? It’s a multi-pronged approach:
Protect: Wear mineral SPF every single day.
Nourish: Feed your skin from the inside with antioxidants and clean protein.
Support: Use gentle, plant-based oils and serums to maintain the skin barrier, such as our Meadowfoam Melt Cleanser or Radiance Facial Oil
Accept: Understand that ageing is a privilege.
A Note on Cosmetic Treatments I want everyone to feel confident. Whether you choose to embrace every fine line as a roadmap of your life, or you prefer a few "tweaks" and cosmetic treatments here and there, that is your choice. There is no right or wrong way to age—there is only your way.
At the end of the day, my goal is to help you have the healthiest surface possible so that your inner glow can actually shine through.
